SURVEY SAYS: Will You Be Working on MLK Day?

January 14, 2010 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - Monday, of course, marks the observance of the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
It’s a federal holiday and the markets are closed.  But if you’re working – well, you’ll have a LOT of company!

It’s a federal holiday and the markets are closed.  But if you’re working – well, you’ll have a LOT of company!

Only about 39% said they wouldn’t be working, while 5% said their workplace was closed, but they’d be working (at least part of the day).

However, for more than half (55.1%) of this week’s respondents Monday is a regular working day.

Among this week’s verbatim were the following:

As usual, I will start on our tax returns, personal and business.

Have doctor appointment and will get car serviced.

We’re open Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, but closed President’s Day.  I have yet to figure out the rationale behind that.

On January 18 I’ll be working, but on Martin Luther King, Jr.’s actual birthday, January 15, I’ll be taking a vacation day.  (It’s my birthday too.)

If I’m not paid to come in to the office, I don’t come in.

It’s Pinewood Derby time!  I will be spending a good part of the day helping my sons finish their cars and making sure the cars meet weight and wheel restrictions.  That’s work to me!

No daycare on Monday, so I am looking forward to spending quality time with my son.

I will be doing community service projects and honoring MLK’s dream.

We offer a floating holiday in lieu of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

I don’t work holidays anymore; if you do, you never get them back and why sacrifice if the company is going to lay you off without so much as a thank you for giving up all your holidays.

GOING TO SOUTH BEACH!!!!!

Among my favorites:

The markets will be closed. Our parent company will be closed. All of our clients will be closed. We will of course be open and doing a great deal of nothing all day.

Oh how I wish we got off all the holidays that the school kids do! I could have another three-day weekend!

Regular work day - if you mean responding to phone calls and e-mails from my iPhone while sitting at youth basketball clinics, well, then yes, it's a regular work day.

Just another (I won't say manic) Monday.

But this week’s bonus Editor’s Choice goes to the reader who reminded us that “Mothers never have a day off”.

Thanks to everyone who participated in our survey!
