N.Y. Pension Checks’ Delivery Slowed by Sorting Snafu
April 15, 2010 (PLANSPONSOR.com) – A U.S. Postal Service investigation has found that 60,000 New York state pension checks were mistakenly put in with bulk mail rather than first class mail by workers at an Albany processing center in a late 2009 snafu.

A news report in the North Country (New York) Gazette said the Postal Inspector General’s office charged that employees at that mail center had not been adequately trained to use a color-coding system that was supposed to streamline mail delivery (see Thousands of NY State Pension Checks Missing).
State comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli publicly blasted the postal service for the problem and demanded a federal investigation of the incident (DiNapoli Seeks Congressional Probe over Lost Pension Checks).
The newspaper said the Postal Service also lost thousands of Social Security checks in the Albany, New York, area.
