In 1945, right around midnight, a Japanese submarine torpedoed the USS Indianapolis. The ship had just delivered key components of the Hiroshima atomic bomb to the Pacific island of Tinian. Of the 1,196 on board, 883 men were killed in the attack - about 400 in the attack itself, and the rest from drowning - or the sharks in the intervening 84 hours before they were rescued.

It was a story retold in chilling detail in the 1975 blockbuster "Jaws."
