Moses Fleetwood Walker was the first African American to play in Major League Baseball. He was a catcher.

Having played several seasons with a white “minor-league team in Toledo,” he joined the American Association when the Toledo Blue Stockings were admitted to the league.

 

However, due to racial tensions and threats, he only played one season. This was 63 years before Jackie Robinson joined the Major League.
