VC Fund Raising Down, But Still Strong
December 28, 2001 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - Venture
capital fund raising is down 21% from last year's
record-setting pace. Still, despite challenging economic
times, 2001 is shaping up to be the third-largest year on
record, according to a report by VentureWire.
Reported by editors@plansponsor.com
In 2001, venture firms launched 200 new funds with total commitments of $55 billion. That included 15 funds with $1 billion or more each in committed capital, according to the report.
A year ago venture firms had launched 250 funds with commitments of $70 billion, including 18 funds of at least $1 billion each.
A major difference was the heightened interest in life science funds. Money raised for those type funds was up 320% to $4.2 billion in 2001, compared to $1 billion in 2000.
