Karl Donitz, chief naval commander, was appointed Fuhrer by Hitler in April 1945. He held power for 23 days, overseeing the removal of more than two million Germans from the eastern districts of Germany before the Russian occupation.
Donitz received a 10-year sentence at the Nuremberg trials.
