Federal Telework Adoption Outpaces Private Sector

March 20, 2007 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - The first side-by-side comparison of telework adoption and IT support between the federal government and private-sector employers shows federal telework adoption outpaces that of the private sector by a three-to-one margin.

According to a CDW news release on its Telework Report, 44% of federal employees said they have the option to telework, compared to 15% of private-sector employees. The number of federal employees with the option is up 6% since last year.

CDW also found the number of federal employees choosing to telework also outpaced that of private-sector employees. Thirty-five percent of federal employees began teleworking in the past year versus 10% of private-sector employees.

Along with the increased adoption of teleworking, federal employers expanded IT support for technical workers. According to the release, 42% of federal IT professionals reported that their agency started or expanded its telework program in the last year, and 62% of federal agencies now have written IT policies for telework in place, compared to 46% in 2006.

Meanwhile, just 25% of private-sector IT professionals reported a new or expanded program in the last year, and 40% of private-sector organizations currently have written telework policies in place.
