In 1962 , John and Clarence Anglin and Frank Lee Morris attempted their now-infamous escape from Alcatraz federal prison. The three were never seen again - and most believe they drowned in the San Francisco Bay - though four days after their escape, a bag containing photos that belonged to Clarence Anglin was found in San Francisco Bay.

They were just three of the 36 men (if you include 2 who actually tried twice) who tried to escape Alcatraz in 14 separate escape attempts over the 29 years the prison was in operation:

 23 were caught

   6  were killed

   2  drowned

The fate of the other five men (including the 3 above) remains unknown, although officially they are listed as "missing and presumed drowned".

By the way, Alcatraz was given its name by a Spanish explorer Juan Manuel de Ayala. In 1775 he discovered the San Francisco Bay, mapped it and named one of the islands Isla de los Alcatraces , after the PELICANS that inhabited it.
