You have to see these guys to believe them!

In Sacramento, California , Kevin Powers was getting dressed for work when he noticed a strange man peering into his kitchen window - - - startled, he ran outside - - - and saw Hector Zavala and Lorenzo Cerecer trying to steal Kevin's bike - - - but having trouble getting their car started - - - so Kevin, about half-dressed for work - - - ducked back inside and grabbed the first thing he could think of - - - a big gun - - - ran out, jumped in front of the "getaway" vehicle with his big gun and told the would-be thieves to get down on the ground - - - they did, and stayed there until police arrived - - - - it turns out that Kevin, who is a rodeo clown, had flashed the big plastic toy gun that he uses at work - - - You can see Kevin tell his tale at http://cbs13.com/local/theft.foiled.clown.2.740699.html

- - - In Arvada, Colorado , police are looking for two men who robbed a convenience store here - - - and managed to hide their identity in an unusual fashion - - - wearing women's thong underwear - - - you can see them in "action" at http://d.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/p/ap/20080531/capt.c7eefa1740344ca99c4760c73096e2e6.odd_thong_bandits_coden201.jpg?x=180&y=270&q=85&sig=3Qo6WlmPTxXcjf1YhhHriQ--

- - - In Orlando, Florida , an as-yet-unnamed bank robber was momentarily successful in his "endeavors", despite a somewhat unorthodox approach - - - walking into a Fifth-Third bank branch here wearing a new Cleveland Indians baseball cap - - - where he handed a bank teller a piece of paper - - - and then showed her he meant business by brandishing a gun - - - well, sort of - - - actually, he showed the gun - - - but left it pointing at himself - - - you can watch him in action at http://www.local6.com/news/16464396/detail.html#

In 1962 , John and Clarence Anglin and Frank Lee Morris attempted their now-infamous escape from Alcatraz federal prison. The three were never seen again - and most believe they drowned in the San Francisco Bay - though four days after their escape, a bag containing photos that belonged to Clarence Anglin was found in San Francisco Bay.

They were just three of the 36 men (if you include 2 who actually tried twice) who tried to escape Alcatraz in 14 separate escape attempts over the 29 years the prison was in operation:

 23 were caught

   6  were killed

   2  drowned

The fate of the other five men (including the 3 above) remains unknown, although officially they are listed as "missing and presumed drowned".

By the way, Alcatraz was given its name by a Spanish explorer Juan Manuel de Ayala. In 1775 he discovered the San Francisco Bay, mapped it and named one of the islands Isla de los Alcatraces , after the PELICANS that inhabited it.
