You may not recall it, but Wile E. Coyote did actually catch the Road Runner - once.

What happened?

In a 1980 made for TV short - "Soup or Sonic", Wile E. Coyote does catch the Road Runner.

However, he is only a couple of inches high, while Road Runner is full size, thanks to a gag involving a chase through a pipeline that gets narrower and narrower.

After a miniature Wile catches the full size Road Runner, he holds up a sign that says - "Okay, wise guys, you always wanted me to catch him. Now what do I do?" - the cartoon then ends.
