Bush Appoints New PBGC Committee Member

September 27, 2001 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - President Bush has named Betsy Atkins to the advisory committee of the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC). Atkins will represent the interest of employers for a term that will expire in 2003.

The seven-member PBGC Advisory Committee carries out several specific responsibilities outlined by ERISA, including advising on PBGC investment policies and procedures for more than $20 billion in retirement assets, the trusteeship of terminated plans and other matters as determined by the PBGC.

John Seal is acting executive director of the committee. Other Board Members include Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao, who acts as chair, Secretary of Treasury Paul O’Neill and Secretary of Commerce Donald Evans.

Atkins is president and CEO of Baja LLC, an independent venture capital firm that focuses on early stage, high tech companies. Previously she was president and CEO of NCI, Inc., a private label manufacturer of neutraceutical food bars.

Following her tenure at NCI, Atkins co-founded Ascend Communications before its acquisition by Lucent Technologies in 1999. In 2000, Ms. Atkins joined the Lucent Board of Directors where she serves on the audit and compensation committees.
