Chavez Plans To Keep An Eye On Labor

February 22, 2001 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - Linda Chavez, President Bush's initial choice for Secretary of Labor, is forming an independent "watchdog" group to keep an eye on union involvement in political campaigns.

Speaking during a lecture about organized labor sponsored by the Heritage Foundation, Chavez said the goal of the new group is to “make sure that [unions] do not have undue influence on our political offices,” according to BNA.

Chavez also commended President Bush’s recent executive order requiring government contractors to post notices informing union workers of their rights to demand refunds of union money used for political campaigns.

However, she said that measure was not enough to curb union influence in public policy.
