EEOC Settles Racial Harassment Suit

March 28, 2002 (PLANSPONSOR.com)-The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has settled a racial harassment suit filed by a group of current and former African-American employees at Scientific Colors Inc. for $1.8 million.

According to the suit, harassment included the display of hangman’s nooses, racist graffiti and racial epithets at Scientific Colors’ Rockdale, Ill. facility.

Besides the payment and an injunction prohibiting future racial harassment, the settlement requires the company to adopt and implement preventive measures.

These measures include: adopting a policy against racial harassment, including video monitoring to prevent racist graffiti, training for managers and employees and periodic reporting to the EEOC regarding complaints of racial harassment at the company.

Scientific Colors Inc. operates as Apollo Colors and manufactures pigments used in printing ink. The company employs approximately 200 people.
