European Funds Center on Luxembourg

April 24, 2002 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - Luxembourg is still the center of Europe's collective funds industry with the number of funds and subfunds up 8% in 2001 compared to the year before, a London financial research company said.

According to data from Fitzrovia, there were 7,414 funds and subfunds with Luxembourg domiciles as of December 31, 2001, up from 6,873 such funds the year before. Total net assets at the close of 2001 were $822 billion.

Filling out the rest of the European collective funds picture, Fitzrovia also said:

  • UBS hung onto its lead as largest fund promoter by assets with $88.7 billion. Total US fund assets were $184.9 billion, behind Swiss firms.
  • JP Morgan walked off with the top slot for assets under administration with $107.1 billion as well as the number one position among custodians with $130.8 billion.
  • Among those offering auditing services, PricewaterhouseCoopers took the lead with 3,373 funds.

Fitzrovia said there were 151 launches of global funds of funds in the Luxembourg market. The largest share of assets in those products went into European bond funds.
