Help-Wanted Index Plummets by 12%

October 25, 2001 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - The Conference Board's monthly Help-Wanted Index, a measure of employment advertisements, dipped by a point, to settle at 52 in September, a 34% plunge from its level one year ago.

Over the quarter, help-wanted advertising fell in all nine regions of the US, with the biggest decreased occurring in:

· the South Atlantic, where help-wanted advertising plunged by 17.8%,
· the West North Central regions, where the number fell by 16.3%, and
· the Mountain states, where it fell by 16.2%.
 
The survey covers job advertising in 51 major newspapers across the US.
