HR Managers Say Formal Evaluations Improve Performance

May 27, 2010 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - The performance review remains a valuable assessment tool, according to human resources (HR) managers surveyed recently by OfficeTeam.

An overwhelming majority (91%) of respondents said formal evaluations are effective in improving employee job performance, according to a press release. Forty percent of HR managers indicated they are “very effective,” and just over half (51%) said they are “somewhat effective.”  

Meanwhile, 6% of respondents said formal evaluations are not very effective at improving employee performance, and 3% indicated they are not at all effective.

Six in 10 respondents reported they conduct these meetings once a year, while 6% said they are conducted quarterly and 12% reported conducting formal evaluations twice per year. Eighteen percent of HR managers said they only conduct performance appraisals as necessary and 5% indicated they never conduct them.  

The survey was conducted by an independent research firm and is based on telephone interviews with more than 500 HR managers at companies with 20 or more employees.
