Illinois Senate Passes Breast Cancer Examination Mandate

May 24, 2007 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - Illinois became the second state behind Oregon on Tuesday to pass legislation that orders health insurance coverage to include breast cancer exams for women, Business Insurance reported.

According to the news report, the mandate doesn’t apply to self-insured employer-sponsored health plans, which are governed by the federal Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) and are exempt from state benefit mandates.

According the news report, the measure – H.B. 147 – garnered unanimous approval from the state Senate, and is expected to be signed by Governor Rod Blagojevich.
