Labor Department Offers Free Health Law Seminar

April 21, 2009 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - Plan sponsors - especially small businesses - in the New Jersey area have an opportunity to learn more about health law.

The free health law compliance assistance seminar is being offered to employers, plan fiduciaries and plan services providers, and is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employee Benefits Security Administration (EBSA) and the New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance.

The seminar will take place on April 22 and 23 at the Essex County College, 303 University Ave., Smith Lecture Hall, Room 2131, in Newark New Jersey.

The seminar will provide an overview of the Labor Department’s Health Benefits Education Campaign, which helps workers and employers, especially small businesses, understand their rights and responsibilities under various health benefits laws.   According to the announcement, sessions will address the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) premium reduction and related provisions in the American Recovery and Reinvestment of 2009 Act (Recovery Act), as well as:

  • the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (including HIPAA privacy),
  • the Family and Medical Leave Act,
  • other federal benefits laws under Part 7 of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act and
  • fiduciary responsibility.

Panelists will include representatives of EBSA, the New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance, the Labor Department’s Employment Standards Administration, the Internal Revenue Service and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.  

Attendees will receive a copy of the booklet “Health Benefits Coverage Under Federal Law,” written information on the Recovery Act and other materials.
