S&P Releases 529 Plan Ed Material

June 25, 2002 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - Standard & Poor's Financial Communications is rolling out a line of products designed to help 529 college savings plan providers educate investors about these increasingly popular programs.

The products include:

  • a 16-page 529-plan guide,
  • an interactive 529 plan calculator,
  • an online tutorial with voiceovers,
  • off-the-shelf articles,
  • custom newsletters, and
  • Web content

The education guide, called “A Complete Guide to 529 College Savings Plans,” and the online tutorial cover tax rules and benefits, contribution limits, estate planning issues, financial aid, and a variety of frequently asked questions.

The calculator allows users to estimate college costs and gauge the tax savings a 529 plan may provide.

The 529 plan market has grown rapidly in recent months as new tax-advantaged rules have gone into effect and the number of plans and investment options has risen dramatically.

By some estimates, 529 plan assets will exceed $20 billion by the end of 2002, more than double the total at the end of 2001, according to S&P.
