TRIVIAL PURSUITS: What Was the First Toy to be Advertised on TV?

But what was the FIRST toy to be advertised on television?

Answer:  Mr. Potato Head.

Interestingly enough, the original Mr. Potato Head Funny Face Kit (launched in 1952, and for less than $1) contained only parts, such as eyes, ears, noses and mouths, and parents had to supply their children with real potatoes (while it was called Mr Potato Head, it was suggested that any fruit or vegetable could be used).

It wasn’t until 1964 that a hard plastic potato ‘body’ was included, replacing the need for a real potato.

This isn’t the first commercial – but you might enjoy checking out this vintage ad for Mr. Potato Head (before the plastic head) at
