VRS Director Named Governor's Chief of Staff

December 10, 2001 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - Virginia Governor-elect Mark Warner on Monday named William Leighty, director of the Virginia Retirement System (VRS), as his new chief of staff.

As VRS director, Leighty has been responsible for running the state’s pension fund, which is the 29th largest public or private fund in the United States. The VRS has 303,000 active and 102,000 retired members with assets of over $35 billion.

Prior to the VRS, Leighty served as:

  • assistant director of the Governor’s Commission on Government Reform
  • deputy commissioner of the Department of Motor Vehicles
  • deputy secretary of transportation.
