Wellstone Takes Pension Fight to Senate

September 17, 2002 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - Even as a new consulting report highlights the looming retiree healthcare crisis, a long-awaited bill has been introduced in the Senate.

The National Retiree Legislative Network (NRLN) announced that Senator Paul Wellstone (D-Minnesota) has introduced SB 2904 – the Senate equivalent of HR 1322, the Emergency Retiree Health Benefits Protection Act.

The retiree lobbying group said in its announcement that it now has 93 Representatives from Congress signed on as co-sponsors of HR 1322 and urged members of the public to contact their lawmaker to get his or her support for the reform efforts.

“We want to make it perfectly clear that the incumbents of both parties are responsible for the mess that has been created by their unwillingness to confront and challenge the way companies have reduced and cancelled their benefits during the 1990’s,” the NRLN statement said. ” These plans, both benefit and pension, have been altered so as to transfer unacceptable risks to workers and retirees.”
