Flexible Work Options Common Factor for Best Employers of Older Workers
According to an AARP press release, its top finisher in the 2006 search – Mercy Health System of Janesville, Wisconsin – offers numerous flexible options, including:
- weekend-only work,
- nursing “float” options (work at different facilities and or departments),
- work-at-home opportunities,
- seasonal work programs that allow staffers to go on leave for extended periods while maintaining benefit eligibility, and
- on-call assignments that involve a limited number of hours per month that can be expanded and/or contracted based on the employee’s availability.
Another winner – number six-ranked Volkswagen of America, Inc. – offers some of its full and part-time employees flex time, compressed work schedules, job sharing and telecommuting. In addition, some employees phase into retirement with part-time work, the release said. The auto manufacturer also gives its retirees work opportunities, such as temporary work assignments, consulting work, and telecommuting, in addition to part-time work.
Other winners offering such alternative arrangements include Hoffmann-La Roche Inc., Principal Financial Group, and Busch Entertainment Corporation.
“These dynamic employers recognize the importance of creating a mutually beneficial work environment,” said AARP CEO Bill Novelli, according to the release. He added that more employers need to recognize the advantages that over-50 workers bring to organizations – experience, motivation and strong engagement.
AARP will feature the Best Employers winners in the November-December issue of its magazine.
