Orientation Segment of the Internship Needs Most Work
The survey – conducted jointly by Babson College and the
Northeast Human Resources Association, an affiliate of the
Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM) – found that
the top three reasons students want internships are: to get
real work experience, building their resumes and learning
new skills.
The survey also found that the aspect of the internship
that could use the most work is the orientation process,
with 45% of respondents reporting that was the case and 30%
saying they were not given adequate training when they
started.
Accounting, finance and banking internships rank as the
highest paid internships by industry, with accounting
majors earning an average of $15.38 per hour and banking
and finance internships paying an average of $17.31 an
hour.
About 32% of respondents say their supervisor didn’t always
provide an adequate explanation about the task the interns
were supposed to do and 20% say supervisors’ requests were
unrealistic.
Respondents listed free or subsidized parking as the most
common benefit they get in an internship, followed by
discounted merchandise or services, among other perks.
