February 20, 2009 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - They say that a picture is worth a thousand words...

Well, here’s a couple of thousand…

In honor of the 200th anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln’s birth, the U.S. Mint is planning to release four new Lincoln pennies this year.   The first, already in circulation, depicts the one-room log cabin in Kentucky where Lincoln was born, the second (due to hit the streets in mid-May) shows him as a rail splitter in Indiana, while the third (August) shows him reporting to work at the Illinois Legislature, and the fourth version, due in November, depicts the U.S. Capitol without its dome.  MORE at http://www.usmint.gov/pressroom/index.cfm?action=Photo#2009LincolnOneCent

...and here's several thousand....literally:

6,000 Separate Paintings ...... and one five minute animated video. It took a student artist two years to paint them all and produce this. Pause the movie at any moment and you have an individual work of art.   It's really cool.

TRIVIAL PURSUITS :   Abraham Lincoln famously ran as a Republican when he won the 1860 U.S. Presidential election.   However, he ran under a different party name in 1864.

Do you know what that was?

He headed the ticket for the NationalUnion Party .

Abraham Lincoln had no trouble garnering the nomination at the 1864 Republican Convention (though he was not the unanimous choice of his party).  The Republican Party then selected Andrew Johnson, a Democratic U.S. senator from the state of Tennessee (he was the only southern Senator to remain loyal to the Union, and was appointed military governor of Tennessee by Lincoln in 1862), as Abraham Lincoln's running mate in order to form a broader coalition.

As part of that effort, the two ran on the new National Union Party ticket, uniting Republicans and what were called "War Democrats" (Democrats who supported Lincoln's position regarding the Civil War, including Andrew Johnson).

Interestingly enough, that also made Johnson the last president to be from a party other than Democrat or Republican.
