– – – In Bayonne, New Jersey , two unnamed teenagers (ages 16 and 17), for reasons unknown, decided to toss some walnuts at a policeman who was standing outside his patrol car after making a traffic stop – – – while Bayonne Police Officer Chester Konopka was questioning the two – – – they each dropped a clear bag containing – – marij.uana – – – they’ve now been charged with juvenile delinquency, aggravated assault on a police officer (who knew walnuts could be so serious?) – – – and possession of marijuana under 50 grams – – –

– – – In Somerville, Massachusetts , an unnamed 51-year-old man strolled into a Dunkin Donuts there – – – wearing a black, wool ski mask – – – and demanded money – – – he got about $70, and left the store – – – apparently leaving footprints in the snow – – – till he got to a bike – – – that also left tracks in the snow – – – that police – – – quickly on the scene (we’re talking Dunkin Donuts, after all) – – – were able to follow to the perpetrator – – –

– – – In Newark, Delaware , an unnamed 33-year-old woman had told boyfriend Derro D. Smith, 26, to get his things and leave her home – – – whereupon Derro allegedly (a) refused to leave, and (b) opened a bag containing live mice – – – the woman was, indeed, terrified of the rodents – – – but managed to shove Derro out of the home before locking herself in a bedroom and calling police – – – Derro has now been charged with hara.ssment and criminal mischief – – –

– – – In Phnom Penh, Laos , Kann Veasna – – – took a break from drinking wine at a street stall – – – and chose to “relieve” himself through a hole in a fence – – – but a playful puppy in the adjoining lot allegedly thought Kann was dangling a toy – – – and “latched on” – – – fortunately for him, doctors said it was “undoubtedly sore now, but luckily it should still be useful to him in the future” – – –

– – – In La Porte, Indiana , Brian Szuflita called the sheriff’s office to report that “guys in ski masks” were in his home and attempting to burglarize it – – – however, when deputies arrived, they could not get him to answer the door – – – so they called him – – – and when he answered the phone, they said he sounded “distressed or intoxicated” and seemed to be “highly paranoid” – – – and then Brian, who had initiated the whole thing, remember – – – told officers he was holding a knife and a handgun – – – officers finally arranged to get a key to the house from a relative – – – and took Brian into custody – – –

– – – In Nassau County, New York , a man named Maharaj – – – who had just been promised the dismissal of a mari.juana possession charge if he did not get into trouble for six months – – – had been arraigned on a drunk driving charge – – – when, according to the judge, “To the astonishment of the entire courtroom,” as Maharaj was surrendering the license to the court clerk, “mari.juana was observed in plain view within the creases of the Defendant’s conditional license” – – –

– – – And finally, in Florence, Wisconsin , two deputies in separate vehicles were dispatched to investigate an anonymous complaint of an underage drinking party – – – deputy #1 approached the scene and observed a vehicle leaving the address and, suspecting they may have been part of the party, turned his squad and began to pursue the vehicle – – – – about three-quarters of a mile down the road, he came upon the suspect’s car in a ditch – – – and an “unknown number” of occupants had run into some nearby woods – – – deputy #1 was gathering vehicle information on the car in the ditch – – – when a second vehicle approached from the direction of the party – – – he flagged down the vehicle – – – and spoke with the two occupants – – – and smelled alcohol – – – so he asked them to pull over, administered a preliminary breath test – – – and found one of the underage persons intoxicated – – – then a third vehicle approached from the direction of the party – – – so, deputy #1 once again flagged it down – – – it stopped, and down came the passenger window – – – where the deputy observed seven to eight people in the vehicle, with several sitting on each others’ laps – – – once again he smelled alcohol – – – so he asked the car to pull to the side of the road – – – instead, the driver of that car “punched it” – – – nearly striking the deputy – – – who radioed ahead to deputy #2, who happened to be just up the road in the direction that the car was flying toward – – – deputy #2 gave chase to the car – – – which was at one point going about 90 mph – – – due to the high risk of injury, the officer chose to discontinue the chase after less than two minutes – – – but he continued to drive in that direction – – – and about a mile down the road, he observed “a large plume of snow” – – – the cause of which appeared to be the suspect vehicle – – – which had unsuccessfully attempted to negotiate a corner, and struck a large snow bank and barbed wire fence – – – and he next spotted eight people running from the vehicle – – – three of the eight responded to his call to stop – – – while this was going on, deputy #1 stopped a fourth vehicle and detained two more partygoers – – – so, they called for more backup to look for the five still on foot, who had broken into two groups – – – now, keep in mind that the temperature that evening was about 10 degrees – – – and there was snow on the ground – – so they were able to track one group to a house about a half mile up the road – – – where one girl had lost her shoes – – – deputies tracked the other three about another three-quarters of a mile – – – where they managed to get into a garage – – – and into a car in the garage – – – where they were spotted – – – about 8 a.m., as they left the garage, by the homeowner – – – who summoned police – – – none of the three were wearing shoes – – – one girl in the first car who ran 1.7 miles through the woods – – – and fell through the ice on a creek – – – was not wearing any shoes – – – all in all, 19 people were involved – – – and seven minor in possession of alcohol citations were issued – – –
