Burning Up Vacation Time Not as Tough

June 28, 2004 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - Using vacation time is becoming somewhat easier for workers, according to a poll by ComPsych Corporation, an EAP provider.

A recent employee poll revealed:

  • about four in 10 (41%) are taking some vacation, including three-day weekends, but saving the rest until the work situation improves
  • 40% are using up all of their allotted time
  • 19% are postponing vacation altogether.

“Employees are showing signs of being more comfortable taking vacation, which is certainly an improvement over last year,” said Richard Chaifetz, chairman and CEO of ComPsych, in a news release. “These trends are a reflection of the improved economy, which has helped employees breathe easier. However, corporate culture at times can make employees feel the need to stay in touch with work by phone and e-mail. These ingrained behaviors can be hard to shake when on vacation, and employees who are too accessible may not reap the benefits of vacation at all.”
