Calvert Appoints Chief Social Investment Strategist

August 2, 2005 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - Calvert, provider of a family of socially responsible mutual funds, has appointed Julie Gorte as Vice President, Chief Social Investment Strategist.

In the newly created position, Gorte will report to Steve Falci, Chief Investment Officer of Equities. According to a company news release, Gorte will provide analysis and commentary on emerging issues in social investing and the intersection of social and financial research.

Previously, Gorte was Director of the Calvert Social Research Department. In that role, she managed a team of analysts that evaluated corporate performance on social and environmental issues and provided shareholder advocacy for Calvert’s socially screened mutual funds.

The news release mentions Gorte’s experience in public policy as well as science and technology policy, including positions at the Environmental Protection Agency’s Climate Policies and Programs Division, the Wilderness Society, and the Congressional Office of Technology Assessment. In addition, she is a member of the board of directors of the Coalition for Environmentally Responsible Economies (CERES) and a member of the board of directors of the Center for a New American Dream.

Falci believes Gorte’s experience will help the company to further develop the field of social investing. He said in the news release, “I look forward to working with Dr. Gorte and leveraging her vast experience in social research and analytical skills to articulate the investment implications of social, environmental and corporate governance factors.”
