COBRA Manager Service Unwrapped

September 30, 2002 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - Benefits managers hoping to ease one of their more complex burdens may want to consider a new health-care service from a Madison, Wisconsin-based third-party administrator.

Total Administrative Services Corporation (TASC) said its COBRAToday product helps companies manage the continuation of medical benefits under the federal Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA).

The 1985 law requires employers to continue health coverage if an employee leaves the company or under certain other circumstances.

TASC said COBRAToday ensures compliance with an individual’s health plan by sending notices in the appropriate timeframe, tracking qualified beneficiary requirements, and maintaining all necessary records.

COBRAToday’s third-party administrative service offers employee rights notification, premium payment collection, and toll-free customer service, according to the company.

Under COBRA, employers that retain 20 or more employees during 50% of the previous year’s business days are required to offer a continuation of group health coverage to eligible individuals and their qualified beneficiaries, such as a spouse or dependent children.
