Council Promotes Off-the-Job Safety Training

June 13, 2001 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - The National Safety Council urges employers to institute off-the-job safety training programs for their employees during Workplace Safety Week, which runs from June 24-30.

While approximately 5,100 people died in 1999 from workplace injuries, costing the nation $122.6 billion, an estimated 40,600 workers were killed in the home and community.

The Council recommends that organizations implement a strict seat-belt policy, adopt a comprehensive code of safety and health ethics, and institute programs that can help prevent workplace violence.

Off-the-job injuries and deaths take a tremendous toll on employers in terms of:

  • lost worker productivity
  • medical expenses
  • administrative expenses
  • motor vehicle damage
  • fire loss among others.
