Despite Privacy Concerns, Workers Said to Support Filters

July 30, 2001 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - While more than half of those surveyed admitted to using their office Internet and e-mail for personal use during work hours, 38% aren't aware of their employers' Internet monitoring and filtering policies, according to a new poll.

Still, the Harris Poll, Internet and E-mail Usage and Monitoring Policies, conducted for SurfControl, an Internet filtering company, found that three-quarters of US employees believe that these measures are necessary in order to:

  • secure confidential information, cited by 85%
  • prevent slowing of transactions, noted by the same proportion,
  • prevent spam, cited by 83%, and
  • safeguard against legal liability, listed by 85%

The Harris Poll interviewed 506 Americans age 18 or over, employed by companies with at least 100 employees.
