EEOC Files Suit against Northwest Airlines

April 27, 2001 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has filed a suit against Northwest Airlines for allegedly refusing to fill ground job vacancies with disabled workers.

The candidate in question suffer from disabilities that could cause loss of consciousness.

The EEOC claims that a Northwest company policy prohibits hiring people with insulin-dependent diabetes or epilepsy that requiring anti-seizure medication, for jobs as airplane cleaners and baggage handlers, according to Reuters.

Northwest disputes the discrimination charges, noting that the applicants sought jobs that would involve working with, and in the vicinity of, heavy equipment involved in passenger loading and fueling operations.

The plaintiffs in the class action include two applicants in Minneapolis, one in Detroit and others not identified.
