Employees Thankful for Workplace Friends

January 21, 2014 (PLANSPONSOR.com) – When asked what they are most thankful for in their jobs, aside from a paycheck, nearly one-quarter (24%) of employees said friendly coworkers.

The survey of office workers by OfficeTeam, a provider of staffing services, asked employees, “Aside from salary, what are you most thankful for at your current job?” The responses include:

  • Friendly coworkers (24%);
  • Good benefits program (20%);
  • Easy commute (16%);
  • Challenging assignments (15%);
  • Supportive manager (11%);
  • Flexible hours (3%);
  • Other (9%); and
  • Don’t know/no answer (1%).

(Note: Responses do not total 100% due to rounding.)

The survey also revealed differences by age. Respondents older than 65 were most thankful for friendly coworkers (40%), followed by those between the ages of 18 and 34 (34%).

“Many full-time workers spend more than half of their waking hours at the office, so having friendly colleagues can make all the difference when it comes to job satisfaction,” says Robert Hosking, executive director of the Menlo Park, California-based OfficeTeam. (See “Our Coworkers, Our Friends”)

The survey was conducted by an independent research firm on behalf of OfficeTeam. It is based on telephone interviews with more than 400 U.S. workers who are 18 years of age or older and employed in office environments.
