Employer Group Publishes Primer on Hospital Care Values

November 30, 2010 (PLANSPONSOR.com) – New York Business Group on Health, a non-profit business coalition of more than 175 organizations, has released “Hospital Care and Employers: A Roadmap for Achieving Value.”

A news release said the publication is a guide to educate employers about available strategies to enhance the value they and their employees receive from hospital-associated care.

“As the country’s health care delivery and finance mechanisms continue to evolve, employers should set their sights on achieving value, which incorporates elements of price, quality of care, and clinical outcomes.  And employers should be aware of the tools and strategies available to them to do so,” said Laurel Pickering, Executive Director of NYBGH and co-author of the employer guide, in the news release.  “This new guide gives employers tools and innovative payment strategies to move the needle in the right direction.”

The employer guide discusses why value in hospital-associated care is important to employers; describes various tools and techniques that employers can leverage to enhance the value they and their employees receive from clinical care before, during, and after a hospital visit; offers tips on how employers can better measure and pay to enhance this type of care; and lists and describes several useful Web and organizational resources devoted to providing quality and cost information.

In light of the new health reform law, the guide highlights several opportunities for employers to align with federal- and state-based value enhancing reforms.

NYBGH recently changed its name to Northeast Business Group on Health.  The employer guide is available on the new NEBGH Web site at www.nebgh.org
