Group Launches Absence Impact Calculators

September 22, 2009 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - A benefits trade group has launched three online calculators to help employers better determine the impact of worker absences companywide or by a specific corporate unit or specific employee group.

A news release from the Integrated Benefits Institute (IBI) said the first calculator examines companywide impact, the second focuses on specific occupations ( salespeople, nurses, or engineers, for example),   and the third models absence-related lost productivity costs for a specific group of workers with measured lost time.

“Employers often don’t know what work absence really costs their company,” said Thomas Parry, IBI president, in the news release. “Our calculators give employers state-of-the-art tools to estimate that cost so they can develop more effective strategies for managing absence and related health issues.”

The three calculators have been developed in partnership with Sean Nicholson, associate professor, Department of Policy Analysis and Management, Cornell University, based on his research with 800 employers.

Although the calculators are available only to IBI members, employers may request a complimentary, one-year membership, the news release said.
