Hartford, West Virginia Team Up for New 529 Plan

July 14, 2003 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - The Hartford Financial Service Group and West Virginia State Treasurer John Perdue have teamed up to create the new Leaders SMART529 plan.

Leaders SMART529 is a multi-manager college savings program designed for people who prefer the services of an investment manager.   Through the Hartford Leaders, the plan offers a multi-manager variable annuity that includes four investment management firms:

  • AIM Investments
  • American Funds
  • Franklin Templeton Investments
  • MFS Investments.

With the addition of a stable value fund option, managed by INVESCO Institutional (N.A.) Inc., there are a total of 16 individual fund options available for investors to create a custom portfolio, or they can choose from eight pre-selected portfolios based on risk tolerance or investing time frame.

The entire SMART529 product lineup available through The Hartford features pre-selected investment portfolios based on investing style or age, as well as individual fund options that allow investors to customize their portfolios. The SMART529 programs may also waive sales charges on transfers and rollovers from other savings programs (qualified college savings plans or other investments, such as mutual funds or savings bonds) to make it easier and efficient for investors to save for college.

Made available through The Hartford for the State of West Virginia, it is obtainable nationwide from investment representatives, brokers and financial planners.
