Help Wanted Ads Drop in July

August 29, 2002 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - Fewer hiring managers sought job candidates via a newspaper ad in July than the month before, according to a closely watched economic indicator.

The Conference Board’s Help-Wanted Advertising Index, which measures help wanted ad volume in 51 major US papers, dropped from 47 to 44 in June. It stood at 57 a year ago.

According to the Conference Board, help-wanted advertising declined in the last three months in seven of the nine regions of the US, and increased in two areas.

Steepest declines occurred in the West South Central (-13.6%), Middle Atlantic (-11.6%), and South Atlantic (-5.7%) regions. Increases occurred in the New England (1.8%) and Pacific (1.0%) regions.
