Home Remedies You May not Know

December 8, 2009 (PLANSPONSOR (b)lines) – No doubt you all know at least one unusual home remedy for some common ailment.

But here are some you may not know from tips in The Big Doctors Book of Home Remedies.

  • Vodka for foot odor – Wipe feet down with a Vodka-soaked washcloth to get rid of foot odor.  As does rubbing alcohol, the alcohol in Vodka kills odor-causing fungus and bacteria, and dries out the moisture that enables their growth.
  • Pencil for tension headaches – To relieve the pain of a tension headache caused by subconsciously clenching the jaw and teeth, straining the muscle that connects the jaw to the temple, put a pencil between teeth, but don’t bite.
  • Yogurt for bad breath – Eat some yogurt to eliminate bad breath. Preliminary research indicates that the live bacteria in yogurt can crowd out or create and unhealthy environment for bad breath-causing bacteria.
  • Listerine for blisters – Moisten a cotton ball with Listerine and dab it on a blister three times a day to dry it out and stop it from hurting. Of course, if you have Listerine, you don’t need the aforementioned yogurt to eliminate bad breath.
  • Tennis ball for foot pain – Achy feet can be massaged by rolling them over a tennis ball. Golf balls and canned foods also work, or use bottled water from the refrigerator for a cooling effect.
  • Sugar for hiccups – A teaspoon of sugar swallowed dry can stop hiccups in minutes, some doctors claim. (Swallowing nine times from a glass of water while holding my breath has ALWAYS worked for me.)
  • Olives and lemons for motion sickness – The excess saliva some doctors say is caused by motion sickness and creates the feeling of nausea can be dried out by sucking on olives, which contain tannins that dry out the mouth, or lemons.
  • Vegetable oil for brittle nails – Before going to bed apply vegetable oil to hands and put on vinyl gloves to prevent brittle fingernails.
  • Peppermint or cinnamon gum for stress – In a recent study (involving simulated driving scenarios) peppermint was found to reduce feelings of fatigue or anxiety, and both peppermint and cinnamon were found to decrease frustration and increase alertness.
  • Apples for teeth whitening – While chewing on any crunchy fruit or vegetable can act as a cleansing agent for teeth, apples also have a gentle malic acid that helps dissolve stains.
