Indiana Launches ‘Reclaim Your Retirement’ Database

More than 6,000 public sector employees in the Hoosier State have retirement funds waiting to be claimed.

The Indiana Public Retirement System launched on Tuesday Reclaim Your Retirement, a secure public database intended to unite the Hoosier State’s public sector employees with their forgotten public retirement benefits.

Individuals can search the database by entering the eligible party’s first and last name and date of birth. If there is a match, the system’s response indicates that the named party or their survivor or beneficiary needs to contact INPRS. Employers can also search for current or former employees in the database to help link them with their forgotten accounts. Financial planners may also search the database to connect clients with their benefits.

As of October, 3,704 members of INPRS had an unclaimed retirement benefit, representing a median monthly benefit payment ranging from $545.50 to $783.50, according to the database landing page. Members may also have an unclaimed defined contribution account, with balances averaging between $14,451 and $33,324.

In addition to active INPRS members, 2,379 retirees, their survivors and beneficiaries may be able to claim money that was initially paid out but later returned to the fund due to a bad address or banking change that made the funds undeliverable. In some cases, benefit checks were delivered as intended but never deposited.

In 2024, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employee Benefits Security Administration launched the public Retirement Savings Lost and Found Database, designed to help American workers and beneficiaries search for retirement plans that may still owe them benefits. Created as part of the SECURE 2.0 Act of 2022, the database serves as a centralized location where individuals or their beneficiaries can search for lost or forgotten retirement accounts and receive guidance on how to claim their funds.

A spokesperson from INPRS confirmed to PLANSPONSOR that the Indiana database is not related to the DOL’s.

INPRS stated that the state’s database will be updated regularly. According to the database landing page, the date of the most recent update of the list will be shown on the website for reference.

With approximately $50 billion assets under management at fiscal year-end 2024, INPRS is among the largest 100 pension funds in the U.S, serving the needs of approximately 542,793 members representing 1,333 employers, including universities, school corporations, municipalities and state agencies.
