IT Recruiters to Candidates: Dress for Success

June 27, 2002 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - Interviewing for an information technology (IT) job is not the time to break out your favorite Ozzy Osbourne garb.

That’s because, according to a recent survey, IT hiring managers evaluate a candidate’s clothing and grooming during an interview, in addition to the applicant’s range of technical knowledge.

In fact, four out of ten IT hiring managers rated personal appearance as very important when evaluating candidates.

Other responses to the question about the importance of a candidate’s grooming in hiring:

  • 48% said it was somewhat important,
  • 10% said it didn’t matter at all, and
  • 2% didn’t know

The poll, conducted by RHI Consulting, involved more 1,400 CIOs from US companies with at least 100 workers.
