Maddaloni Retains Pipefitters Union Presidency

August 7, 2001 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - Unofficial results indicate that Martin J Maddaloni has been re-elected General President of the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing, Pipefitting, Sprinklerfitting Industry of the US and Canada.

Maddoloni, who has held the office since 1997, defeated rival Tommy L Preuett by 2,002 to 1,233 votes at the union’s 36 th convention in Miami Beach, Florida.

Maddoloni and Preuett have been at odds over the controversy surrounding the purchase of the Diplomat hotel in Hollywood Florida for $40 million by the union’s pension plan. At the time of purchase, total hard costs for renovating the building were estimated at about $400 million.

To date costs have spiraled out of control, reaching $800 million, some 20% of participants, assets, and the hotel’s opening date was repeatedly delayed.
