Mirage Settles EEOC Race Discrimination Suit

December 2, 2002 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - The Mirage Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas has agreed to pay more than $1 million as part of an out-of-court settlement of a racial discrimination lawsuit.

In its suit, the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) charged the Mirage with discriminating against African- American and Hispanic applicants from January 1, 1996, until May 31, 1997 prior to the acquisition of The Mirage by MGM Grand, Inc. (Now MGM Mirage) in 2000, according to the EEOC.

The settlement agreement, filed with the EEOC’s lawsuit in the US District Court for the District of Nevada, calls for $840,000, to go to a class of African-American and Hispanic applicants, the EEOC said.

Along with implementation of appropriate complaint procedures, the hotel agreed to conduct anti-discrimination training and to take on recordkeeping obligations to be monitored by the EEOC during the agreement’s three-year term.

The remaining money will be used to implement training programs, the EEOC said.
