More Americans Industry Hopping

March 12, 2002 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - Americans may be getting increasingly impatient with the career advancement possibilities in their profession as a new online survey reports that 65% of those polled have changed industries or are considering such a move.

Also four in ten respondents have relocated or were contemplating moving to a different area in search of work, the TrueCareers survey found. TrueCareers is an online career recruiter sponsored by education finance agency Sallie Mae.

Why make the move? The survey found that the industry changers saw employment shortages in their previous field.

Layoffs – both actual and feared – were a big part of the TrueCareers study. An overwhelming 85% of respondents admitted the still uncertain economy has cut their standard of living either because they’re already out of work or fear being laid off. Half of the respondents still employed said they feared being laid off.

In the case of 47% of respondents, the job ax fell in their most recent job. Of those, four in ten have been job hunting for more than six months.

The survey, conducted on www.TrueCareers.com during February 2002, covered nearly 600 respondents.
