Most Workers Figure Their Job Safe – For Now

December 22, 2000 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - In the midst of a new wave of layoff announcements, the vast majority of US workers think their jobs are secure - at least for the next 12 months.

Just 1.5% expect to be downsized or fired during the next year, but 13% expect to leave on their own to take a position with another company, according to a national telephone survey sponsored by outplacement firm Lee Hecht Harrison.

Over three-quarters (76.8%) expect to be working for the same company a year from now.

While most of the survey results were comparable to findings a year ago, just 2.2% plan to retire in the next 12 months versus 6.5% in 1999. At the same time, 6% of respondents don’t know where they’ll be working a year from now, up from 2.2% in last year’s survey.
