New S&P Index Tracks Small, Mid Markets

January 15, 2002 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - Investors looking for a way to draw a line between large capitalization stocks and the rest of the equity market may find help in a newly-launched equity index.

Standard & Poor’s unveiled the S&P 1000, a combination of the S&P MidCap 400 and S&P SmallCap 600 Indices, according to the index provider.

The S&P 1000 represents $1.2 trillion of investable and liquid mid-cap and small-cap companies and, which, together with the S&P 500, makes up the S&P SuperComposite 1500 Index.

The S&P 1000 represents 10.46% of the market capitalization of the S&P SuperComposite 1500.

Index candidates are selected according to the same criteria used for the S&P 500:

  • trading analysis,
  • liquidity,
  • ownership,
  • fundamental analysis,
  • market capitalization, and
  • sector representation
