NY Comptroller Criticized over Web Site Suggestion Workers Pad Pensions

September 7, 2010 (PLANSPONSOR.com) – The New York Comptroller’s Office, which oversees retirement benefits for state workers, is taking heat for suggesting on its Web site that employees pad their pensions by working lots of overtime.

The Associated Press reports that the pension how-to guide also suggests workers stockpile vacation time as a way of boosting benefits. A DiNapoli spokesman said the office just wants to make sure workers understand their rights, and called the language on the page “unfortunate,” according to the news report.

State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli told the Democrat and Chronicle of Rochester that his office is making changes to the Web page.

New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo has criticized both practices as abuses of the system.
