Participants May Retire Early, Poor

March 30, 2001 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - While more than half (58%) of Americans believe that working beyond age 65 improves longevity, 42% plan to retire before that age.

Most (61%) believe they will remain healthy and active past the age of 75, and nearly a third expect to live past 85.

  • 32% say they will have $100,000 or less in total savings upon retirement
  • 17% believe they will have saved between $100,000 and $250,000
  • 14% anticipate a total savings between $250,000 and $500,000
  • 20% plan to have a nest egg of $500,000 or more.
