REIT February Performance Slows

March 2, 2004 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - Real Estate Investment Trusts (REIT) slowed a bit in February, as the NAREIT Composite turned in a 2.19% increase over the month - well below January's 4.3% hike.

Strongest among the NAREIT Composite’s components was the Mortgage REIT Index that was up 7.24% for the month, followed by a 5.65% for the Hybrid REIT index. The Real Estate 50 Index mirrored the composite with a 2.19% hike, while the Equity REIT Index turned in a 1.75% showing for February, according to data provided by the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts (NAREIT). 

January’s performance (See  REITs Continue Rise in January ) followed a 3.43% December increase.

By comparison in the broader markets, the S&P 500 ended the month up 1.39%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average finished with a 0.91% showing while the NASDAQ composite finished down 1.76%.
