Retirement Money Concerns Top Recent Survey Response List

July 20, 2006 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - Facing their retirement years, workers in one recent poll were not too worried about being alone.

According to aWestport, Connecticut ,provider of specialty health services, respondents were most concerned about how they would pay their bills in retirement and whether they could enjoy their latter years in good health.

A news release from LifeCare shows respondents said their biggest retirement concerns are:

  • Finances – 59%
  • Health – 17%
  • Staying independent and physically active – 14%
  • How they will spend their time – 6%
  • Being alone – 2%
  • Where they will live – 1%
  • Other – 1%.

“It’s no surprise that money tops the list of retirement concerns,” LifeCare CEO Peter Burki said in the news release. “But it is interesting to note that the next three responses – health, independence and how to spend one’s time – are all related to the notion of ‘vitality,’ and they account for almost 40% of the responses.”

Burki asserted that aging and retirement concerns are hot button issues because nearly half of the nation’s workforce is now 40 or older.

“That means literally millions of people in their 30s, 40s and 50s are interested in managing mid-life issues more effectively,” Burki continued. “In fact, many of them looking to their employers for guidance on these matters, which creates a huge opportunity to build stronger relationships along with greater satisfaction and retention levels.”

LifeCare conducted the poll throughout June on its Web site, which is open to employees and members of LifeCare’s 1,500 client companies nationwide.
