SC Lawmakers Approve Adult Child Coverage Tax Law
April 7, 2011 (PLANSPONSOR.com) – South Carolina legislators have joined other state lawmakers in passing legislation to exempt employees’ adult child health coverage from state taxes.

Business Insurance reports the legislation has been sent to Governor Nikki Haley.
The new federal health care law requires employers to extend health care coverage to employees’ adult children up to age 26. Subsequent Internal Revenue Service rules said the coverage can be extended on a tax-free basis through the end of the year in which the child turns 26.
Most states do not need to pass measures because their statutes are amended automatically to reflect changes in federal tax law, but the states in which statutes aren’t automatically amended are lining up to pass new legislation (see AR Legislators Approve Elimination of Adult Child Coverage State Tax).
