SF Board of Supervisors' Committee OKs Healthcare Coverage for Uninsured
July 18, 2006 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - The Budget and
Finance Committee of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors
approved legislation Monday that would provide health care
coverage to an estimated 85,000 uninsured city
residents.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the measure that was proposed by Supervisor Tom Ammiano and the city’s mayor must now go to the full committee before the Board of Supervisors.
If passed, the proposal would actually expand a 10-year-old program that covers medical expenses for lower-income residents called Medi-Cal. The expanded program would insure those not yet covered, regardless of immigration status or pre-existing medical condition (See Current Newsom Health Plan Expands Earlier Coverage Program ).
The plan would call on San Francisco businesses to pay $1.06 or $1.60 per employee, depending on the size of the company, and would also require about $104 million in city funds and $56 million in consumer funds, according to the Chronicle.
